Which roof fits your patio?
Solid Patio Cover vs. Insulated Patio Cover vs. Louvered Roof
A solid patio cover blocks sun and rain at the lowest cost, an insulated patio cover does the same while keeping the space underneath cooler and quieter, and a louvered roof lets you open and close the slats. All three go over the same patio or deck, so the choice comes down to heat, budget and how much control you want over the sky.
| Solid patio cover | Insulated patio cover | Louvered roof |
| Roof | Aluminum roof panels | Aluminum panels with a foam core | Aluminum slats that rotate |
| Sun and rain | Blocks both | Blocks both | Blocks both when closed, opens for sky |
| Heat underneath | Shaded | Cooler, the core stops heat radiating down | Adjustable |
| Rain noise | Noticeable | Quiet | Moderate |
| Fans and lights | Mounted to the beams | Can be built into the panels | Mounted to the frame |
| Cost | Lowest | Middle | Highest |

Attached or Freestanding: Which Patio Cover Fits Your Yard?
An attached patio cover connects to the house, usually at the fascia or tied into the roofline, and covers the patio right outside your back door. A freestanding cover sits on its own posts and footings anywhere in the yard, such as over a fire pit, an outdoor kitchen or a hot tub. Attached covers are the more common choice because they extend the living space you already use.
On a ranch or a home with a low roofline, we check the height before anything else. The cover needs enough pitch to drain and enough headroom to feel open, and that sometimes means tying into the roof instead of hanging off the fascia.
Patio Covers Across the Charlotte Area
Many of the newer two-story homes in Huntersville, Concord and Union County came with a bare concrete patio off the kitchen, and a patio cover is often the first thing owners add. Most of those neighborhoods have an HOA, so plan for architectural review. Our HOA approval guide walks through what to submit.
West of the Catawba River in Gaston County and down in Fort Mill, larger lots leave room for a freestanding cover, often over a grill area or a spot by the pool.
How Much Does a Patio Cover Cost in Charlotte?
Patio cover cost in Charlotte depends on size, solid or insulated roof panels, attached or freestanding, and extras like fans, lights and gutters. Solid covers cost the least, insulated covers cost more, and attached covers usually cost less than freestanding ones of the same size. You get a written price at a free on-site estimate.
A patio cover is a roofed structure, so most need a building permit. In Mecklenburg County that goes through Mecklenburg County Code Enforcement. We prepare the drawings and handle the permit and inspections, and if you're adding fans or lights, the electrical work is permitted too.
