Express Sunrooms of the Carolinas

Custom Pergola Builders in Charlotte, NC

Express Sunrooms of the Carolinas has built pergolas across Charlotte since 1995, over patios, decks, pool corners and outdoor kitchens from Ballantyne to Huntersville. We build classic timber and low-maintenance aluminum pergolas on real concrete footings, handle the permit when one is needed, and most builds take only a few days on site.

Pergola Installation Done Right, From the Footings Up

A pergola that stays straight for 20 years starts underground: concrete footings sized for the span and Charlotte’s clay soil, posts anchored to them, and beams sized to the North Carolina Residential Code. Wind and summer storms find every shortcut, so we build the structure first and the style on top of it.

On that frame goes your look: slat spacing for the shade you want, stain or finish color, and extras like canopies, privacy screens and lighting.

Wood or Aluminum: Pergolas Built for Carolina Weather

Timber pergolas give the classic look at a lower upfront price but need staining every couple of years in Charlotte’s humidity; aluminum costs more on day one and then never needs staining, rotting or repainting. We build both, and the choice is about looks and upkeep, not strength.

The comparison below shows how a pergola stacks up against a louvered roof and a solid patio cover, the two step-up options we also build.

The Anchor of an Outdoor Living Space

Most pergolas we build are not standing alone: they shade a new deck, frame an outdoor kitchen, or sit over the patio beside a screened porch. Because one crew builds all of it, the footings, heights and lines match, and building the pergola with the deck costs less than adding it a year later.

Planning the bigger picture? Start with the deck or the screened porch and we will design the pergola into it.

Which shade structure fits your patio?

Pergola vs. Louvered Roof vs. Solid Patio Cover

A pergola gives filtered shade and an open-sky feel; a louvered roof adds adjustable slats that close against rain; a solid patio cover blocks sun and rain completely. All three mount over the same patio, so the choice comes down to how much sky you want to keep:

Attached or Freestanding: Which Pergola Works for Your Yard?

An attached pergola mounts to the house over a patio or deck and extends your living space; a freestanding pergola anchors a spot in the yard, a fire pit, an outdoor kitchen, a poolside corner. Either way the posts sit on concrete footings sized for the span, and larger or attached structures may need a permit through Mecklenburg County Code Enforcement, built to the North Carolina Residential Code. We handle the drawings and the permit when one is required, on jobs across the area including Huntersville, Concord and Fort Mill.

How Much Does a Pergola Cost in Charlotte?

Pergola cost in Charlotte depends on size, material and mounting: aluminum costs more than pressure-treated wood upfront but never needs staining, attached units cost less than large freestanding ones, and extras like canopies, screens or lighting add from there. A pergola is the most affordable of the three shade structures we build.

Great to work with. Express Sunrooms of Charlotte seem to care about us as the customer. Very responsible and reasonable. Perform high quality results and willing to take on smaller jobs like putting a metal roof on our over-sized shed. Glad we found Express at the Charlotte/Concord Home show. Will continue to work with them in the future. Super plus all the way!

David and his crew did an awesome job! They gave me the best price out of many estimates. Put me on the schedule quicker than any other company could! Not because they didn't have the same workload....but because his guys actually work hard and get the job done quickly! Even the 95 degree heat didn't slow them down! My fence was made in The USA which was the icing on the cake for me! A great crew of Southern hospitality! Thanks again! :)

Common Questions

Pergola Questions from Charlotte Homeowners

The questions we hear most before a pergola build. Don't see yours? Call us or send a message.

How much does a pergola cost in Charlotte, NC?

Size, material and mounting drive the price: aluminum costs more than pressure-treated wood upfront but never needs staining, and attached pergolas usually cost less than large freestanding ones. See ranges in our pricing guide or use the cost calculator.

Do I need a permit for a pergola in Mecklenburg County?

It depends on size and whether it attaches to the house: many small freestanding pergolas do not need one, while attached and larger structures usually do. We check your specific project against county rules and pull the permit when one is required. Read more about permits.

Wood or aluminum pergola: which is better for Charlotte?

Wood gives the classic timber look and costs less upfront, but needs staining every couple of years in our humidity. Aluminum costs more on day one, never rots or needs staining, and keeps its finish through Carolina sun. Both are built on the same footings, so it is a look-and-upkeep decision, not a strength one.

Does a pergola actually give shade?

Yes, filtered shade: the slat spacing cuts direct sun while keeping the open-sky feel. For more coverage we can tighten slat spacing, add a canopy, or step you up to a louvered roof whose slats close completely against sun and rain.

Can you build the pergola over my existing patio or deck?

Usually, yes. Over a slab patio the posts anchor to footings at the edges; over a deck we confirm the framing can take the posts or add footings through it. If you are planning a new deck too, building both together is cheaper than adding the pergola later.

When is the best time to build a pergola in Charlotte?

Fall and winter. Spring is the busiest season for outdoor projects, so booking in the off-season usually means faster scheduling, and the pergola is ready the day the weather turns. Most builds take only a few days on site.
