We make the entire retractable awning installation process easy and stress-free. From the initial conversation to final inspection, you’ll know exactly what’s happening every step of the way.
Express Sunrooms of the Carolinas installs retractable awnings in Charlotte and the towns around it, from Matthews and Weddington to Huntersville and Fort Mill. Shade at the press of a button in summer, full sun and open sky when you want it, and most installations are finished in a single day.
A retractable awning turns the hottest side of your house into usable space. Our awning installation crews mount them over patios, decks, sliding doors and west-facing windows across Mecklenburg County, and every unit is sized on site so the projection actually covers your seating area, not just the doorway.
You choose the width, projection, fabric and color, then manual crank or motorized operation.
Motorized awnings can add a wind sensor that retracts the awning automatically when gusts pick up, and smart controls that work from your phone.
All fabrics and motors are covered by the manufacturer’s warranty.
Charlotte gets strong summer sun and fast-moving afternoon storms, which is exactly the combination a retractable awning is built for. Here is what one changes:
Already have a covered porch and want shade beyond it? An awning extends past the roofline where a fixed cover cannot. Get a rough number in the cost calculator or ask for an on-site estimate.
Which one is right for you?
Both use the same frame and fabric. The difference is how they open, and what happens when the weather turns.
| Manual (hand crank) | Motorized | |
|---|---|---|
| How it opens | Removable hand crank, about 30 seconds | Wall switch, remote or phone app, a few seconds |
| Power needed | None | Standard outdoor outlet or hardwired |
| Wind protection | You retract it yourself before a storm | Optional wind sensor retracts it automatically |
| Best for | Smaller patios, budget projects | Wide decks, daily use, rental properties |
| Cost | Lower | Higher, mainly the motor and sensor |
| Maintenance | Very little | Very little; motor is sealed |
In the Charlotte area, most homeowners choose motorized with a wind sensor. Summer storms come in fast here, and the sensor retracts the awning before the gusts arrive whether you are home or not.
The width and projection of the awning drive the price more than anything else, followed by the choice of manual or motorized operation. A motor and wind sensor add to the cost but are the most requested options we install. Most awnings are installed in a single day, so labor stays predictable.

Express Sunrooms of the Carolinas is a family business run by David Canupp from our office on Pleasant Oaks Circle in northwest Charlotte. Awnings are one of our fastest projects: measured on the site visit, installed in a day, often alongside a screened porch or patio cover. Here is what our 100-plus projects a year mean for yours.
Thirty years on Charlotte homes means we know which walls carry an awning, which HOAs want fabric samples, and which exposures need a wind sensor.
Width and projection are measured at your house so the shade lands where you sit, and the brackets match your wall framing.
Wall switch, remote or phone app, plus wind sensors that retract the awning automatically. We handle the electrical coordination.
The crew that measures is the crew that installs, and most awnings go up in a single day with the site left clean.
We make the entire retractable awning installation process easy and stress-free. From the initial conversation to final inspection, you’ll know exactly what’s happening every step of the way.
We begin with a free in-home consultation to understand your goals and evaluate your space. Our team will help you select from various awning fabric options, colors, and control systems—motorized or manual—to perfectly match your home’s needs.
After measurements and approvals, we design your custom awning installation based on your preferences and property layout. You'll get clear recommendations on width, projection, fabric and motorized or manual operation to match your home's exterior.
Once the design is finalized, our technicians handle every detail of installation. We use high-quality materials engineered to withstand Charlotte’s weather while maintaining smooth functionality for years. You’ll get a UV-resistant awning that performs beautifully season after season.
After installation, we demonstrate the awning’s operation, cleaning, and care. If you ever need awning maintenance or repair, our local team is just a call away.
Common Questions
The questions we hear most before an awning goes up. Don't see yours? Call us or send a message.
Width and projection drive the price more than anything else, followed by manual versus motorized operation. A motor and wind sensor add to the cost but are the options most Charlotte homeowners choose. See ranges in our pricing guide or get a number for your space in the cost calculator.
Usually not. A retractable awning attached to the house is normally not treated as a structural addition the way a roofed porch is, and we confirm the current county requirement for your address before installation. If your neighborhood has an HOA, approval is often required, and we provide the drawings and fabric samples they ask for.
An extended awning should always be retracted in high wind, and that is exactly what it is designed to do: fold flat against the wall in seconds. Motorized awnings can add a wind sensor that retracts the awning automatically when gusts pick up, which matters in Charlotte where summer storms arrive fast. Retracted, the awning sits protected against the house year round, including in winter.
Most retractable awnings are installed in a single day. The awning mounts to the wall or roof structure over your patio, deck or door, and a motorized unit needs a standard outdoor outlet or hardwired connection, which we coordinate. Lead time for the awning itself depends on the size and fabric you choose.
Over patios, decks, sliding doors and windows. The mounting surface needs to carry the load, so on the site visit we check the wall framing or, where needed, mount to the roof structure. Wide spans and second-story decks are both possible with the right brackets.
They solve different problems. An awning gives you shade when you want it and full sun when you do not, and it disappears in winter. A fixed patio cover or louvered cover gives permanent rain protection and can carry fans and lighting. Many Charlotte homes end up with an awning on the sunny side and a covered area for dining.

Perform high quality results and willing to take on smaller jobs like putting a metal roof on our over-sized shed. Glad we found Express at the Charlotte/Concord Home show. David and his crew did an awesome job! They gave me the best price out of many estimates. Put me on the schedule quicker than any other company could! Not because they didn't have the same workload....but because his guys actually work hard and get the job done quickly! Even the 95 degree heat didn't slow them down! My fence was made in The USA which was the icing on the cake for me! A great crew of Southern hospitality! Thanks again! :)
